D1 wins second straight world series championship
The Penn State Baseball Club (D1) took home their second straight world series championship last weekend after defeating Grand Canyon 7-1. This was the club’s 5th national championship and the 4th at the D1 level. Third Baseman Nate Zimcosky earned MVP of the tournament after going 9-for-17 with eight runs batted in and two home runs. The Nittany Lions got hot when it mattered, with this win capping off a 14-game winning streak to end the season. The club will look to carry that momentum into next season where they return over 75% of the roster.
The tournament started with a 5-1 win over Michigan, with Brady Palmer pitching six strong innings allowing zero runs and just two hits. Penn State then took on Grand Canyon, and in one of the wildest games you’ll see the Nittany Lions won the game 16-13. Tanner Singh had a home run early in the game, and Nate Zimcosky was the hero hitting a grand slam in the 8th to take the lead. Penn State’s next opponent was Florida State, who they have matched up with in the semifinals for the past three years. The Lions won convincingly this time around, taking the 8-1 victory. Scott Hodinko pitched seven innings giving up just one run while Nate Zimcosky and Tanner Singh both homered. That win got Penn State to the championship game, where they would rematch Grand Canyon. Unlike last time, the Grand Canyon offense was quiet with Brady Palmer throwing a complete game allowing just one run. Hodinko drove in four runs including a three-run jack in the 8th to ensure the win.
